With the spring season quickly approaching, it doesn’t take much for annual weeds to decorate your desert landscaping. Annual weeds grow from seeds and are the most common type of weed you may find in Arizona. These seeds will germinate quickly with rising temperatures and an increase in moisture, causing your yard to be overrun before you know it.

There are hundreds of annual weed seeds hiding in the soil that are just waiting for enough water and increasing temperatures. One way to avoid an invasion is to stop it before it starts by applying a pre-emergent. Pre-emergent stops the germination of annual weeds seeds before they even get the chance to show their ugly faces. For those that have already germinated, you will need to apply a post-emergent. Post-emergent kills weeds that have already surfaced by working systemically through its root.

Another type of weed you commonly see in Arizona is called a perennial weed. These would typically be your Bermuda and Nut grasses. Since perennial weeds grow from a root system, applying pre-emergent will not eradicate them. To eliminate unwanted perennial weeds you need a specialty product called a “selective herbicide”. Selective herbicides work through the root system without damaging the other landscaping in your yard.
