Save Money and Energy Today

Let’s face it- everyone is looking for ways to cut existing bills without feeling the pinch. Air Duct Cleaning can be one of the home maintenance projects that not only result in the obvious cleaner, healthier indoor air, but also results in savings on power bills and can extend the life of your HVAC system.

The State of Arizona estimates that up to 33% of heating and cooling costs are directly attributable to duct leakage.

The leakage, usually found in the seams and joints of the ducts, is sealed as part of air duct cleaning performed to NADCA (The National Air Duct Cleaners Association) standards. Proper sealing will:

  1. Keep your insulation out of the air stream in your home, and in the attic where it belongs.
  2. Reduce the time you spend dusting and vacuuming attic dust and migrating insulation fibers.
  3. Keep cooled and heated air directed into your home, rather than in your attic, saving money on power bills.
  4. Reduce your allergies caused by dust, allergens and insulation leaking into your home.

The NADCA Standard ACR 2006 also requires acid washing the coils on the HVAC unit, which will reduce the resistance caused by a dirt and debris build-up. This important maintenance procedure:

  1. Extends the life of the A/C unit, one of the most expensive investments in your home
  2. Restores the original efficiency (SEER) of the unit, saving money on power bills.
  3. Prevents recontamination of clean ducts with the dirt and debris trapped there

www.nadca.com has a free checklist for homeowners to maximize your savings by getting a complete duct cleaning. Make sure your duct cleaning company is NADCA Certified to get the job done right! There shouldn’t ever be an extra charge to do a complete cleaning (including the coils).

The HVAC system in your home is the “heart and lungs” of your home. Keeping your system clean will result in a much healthier environment for you and your family, while saving money on your energy bills and keeping your insulation in place where it belongs.

Beat the Heat

With summer right around the corner and the hot Arizona temperatures on the rise, now is a good time to give your home a summer tune-up. One of the most important and commonly overlooked components of your homes defense against these high temperatures is the insulation in your attic.

Did you know that insulation acts as a blanket or barrier between the interior of your home and the super heated air in your attic?

Just by re-insulating and ventilating that space you can:

  • Save hundreds of dollars per year
  • Get a tax credit too
  • It's fast
  • Inexpensive (most homes take just a few hours)
  • Add years to the life of your air conditioner not to mention the comfort level of the home.

Don’t put it off another summer, remember last year’s cooling bill. Keep your cool and save money too.

Garage Door Safety

A garage door is the largest moving object in the home. It is often operated by electric door openers. Proper installation, operation and maintenance and testing of the garage door and automatic opener are necessary to provide safe, trouble-free operation. An improperly adjusted garage door or automatic opener can exert deadly force when the door closes. This could lead to serious injury or death from being hit by a closing garage door or from being trapped under the door. Learn more great tips and maintenance suggestions.

Safety is Everyone's Business

A few simple precautions can protect your family and friends from potential harm. Please take a few minutes to read the following safety and maintenance tips. Refer to your garage door and opener owner's manual for details specific to the model you own.

DO NOT stand or walk under a moving door!

  • Do not let children or adults play "beat the door." It is dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. Adults should set a good example.
  • Know how to use the emergency release, in case someone is pinned by the door.

DO NOT let children play with or use the transmitters or remote controls. Always place and store them out of the reach of children.

  • The push-button wall control should be out of reach of children (at least 5 feet from the floor) and away from all moving parts.
  • Mount and use the button where you can clearly see the moving garage door.
  • Garage door openers are not toys. Careless operation and allowing children to play with or use garage door opener controls can lead to tragic results.
  • Discuss garage door safety with your children. Explain the danger of being trapped under the door.
  • Teach children never to play under or near an open garage door.
  • Teach children to keep their hands and fingers clear of section joints, hinges, track, springs and other door parts. Contact with a moving door or its hardware could cause serious injury. These injuries can also happen with garage doors that don't have automatic openers.

Maintenance Tips:
Look at the garage door:

  • springs
  • cables
  • rollers
  • pulleys and other door hardware for signs of wear
If you suspect problems, have a qualified person make repairs.

Regularly lubricate the moving parts of the door. Do not lubricate plastic parts such as plastic rollers and plastic idler bearings. Consult the door owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendation.

Get Ready for the Great Outdoors

Now is a great time to start cut backs needed to promote healthy growth on trees and shrubs. Installing any plants in the early spring helps promote the growth needed before the Arizona summer heat arrives.

Many people here in Arizona opted for having an area in their yard where there is real grass for their children or dogs to play on. Learn more tips about the care and correct grass for your lawn.

A common grass grown here in Arizona is Bermuda grass because it “loves” the sun. It can be planted from grass seed and requires less care and mowing than some of the other types of grass.

When the nights begin to hit an average of 65 degrees, Bermuda grass starts to grow. This is typically is in late spring after the danger of frost has passed.

If you plant Bermuda seeds too late in the season you might find the grass will not strive. You take the chance of it dying because of the lack of growth will not promote the proper root system needed to feed the grass.

Having a great lawn often requires the expert touch from a professional.

Many people are spending less time on vacation and more time on “staycations” utilizing their newly landscaped property.

Plantings are extremely important when living in Arizona. With the correct planting choices:

  • Your house can benefit with less water usage
  • Provide more shade
  • Planting material can decrease the work load on the air conditioner
  • Limit sun exposure to windows and your house
  • The savings are endless
  • Prolong the life of your drapes, furniture, both indoor and outdoor
  • You may also use planting material for privacy and hiding unsightly neighbor structures.

Outdoor landscape lighting can extend your living space and create an elegant atmosphere for entertaining. The lighting benefit includes security:

  • Safety
  • Investment

Increased demand for energy efficient lighting has lead to many updates and energy efficient options for outdoor lighting including LED fixtures.

Synthetic turf options are great looking and a very durable alternative to natural grass for your residential or commercial properties. Synthetic turf will save valuable resources and money over time.

To capitalize on utility savings, try adding an outdoor kitchen, renovate a grass to dessert design, adding a putting green or turf to your backyard. Or, you may just want to update your irrigation timer and check your irrigation for leaks. Many cities are offering rebates to help with these savings.
